Starting your journey as a chippy apprentice is exciting, but the road to becoming a skilled carpenter can be overwhelming. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Carpentry Australia to bring you these 5 essential tips you need to help you lay a solid foundation for your career.

Whether you’re just getting your hands on the tools or you’re in your third year, tick each tip off knowing that you’ve safeguarded your future the right way.

  1. Tools of the Trade

Having the proper tools is key to getting the job done right and making life easier on-site. If you’re on a budget, start with the essentials and invest in quality tools over time. Look out for apprentice discounts or second-hand tools in good condition.

Must-Have Tools? Hammer, tape measure, chisels, nail gun, spirit level, square, and a sturdy tool belt to carry them all. Keep the tools clean, store them properly, and don’t forget to sharpen your chisels regularly to make them last longer.

Tools are your bread and butter, so don’t skimp on quality. Cheap tools will break, and you’ll end up spending more in the long run.

  1. Insurance You Actually Need

You’re probably covered by your employer’s workers’ compensation and public liability insurance. But do you have all the cover you need – for your tools, your ute, and accidents that happen outside of work?

Let’s face it, things don’t always go to plan. Tools can get stolen, accidents happen, and there may be times you can’t work. With imar, you can make sure your livelihood is protected with the tradie insurance cover that suits you.

  1. Safety Smarts

Safety isn’t just about ticking boxes;  it’s about making sure you go home in one piece every day. You’re working with sharp tools, heavy materials, and sometimes at heights. Back to basics, always wear your PPE (steel-capped boots, gloves, safety glasses, and a hard hat). Learn how to use the right tools properly (don’t improvise!), and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re unsure.

  1. Expand Your Network

Carpentry is as much about who you know as what you know. Building a strong network can open doors to new opportunities, mentorship, and even job offers. As a Carpentry Australia member, you can gain access to exclusive events, training programs, and a community ready to support you. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, ask questions, and learn from others in the industry.

  1. Budgeting & Government Support

Managing your finances as an apprentice can be tough, but there’s help available. The Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP) Apprentice Incentive offers up to $10,000 for full-time apprentices in the housing construction sector. If you’re training for certifications on the priority occupation list, you may also be eligible for up to $2,500 to help with living expenses. Check with your local government for additional support programs.

  1. A Plan for the Future

Decide what you want to achieve during your apprenticeship and beyond. Explore different areas of carpentry, from cabinetry, framing, roofing, and project management. Talk to your boss or mentor about your goals. They’ve been where you are and can offer advice to help you get where you want to go.

As part of Carpentry Australia, apprentices receive free membership that they can utilise for the lifetime of their traineeship – get involved and get support immediately! Take advantage of Carpentry Australia’s resources, training programs, industry updates, and networking opportunities.

Your apprenticeship is just the beginning. Whether you want to specialise, start your own business, or become a master chippy, these tips will help lay the foundation to get you there.

Follow these tips, stay up to date with industry news from Carpentry Australia, and protect your tools and livelihood with imar.
