How To

You might be starting up your own business or becoming a contractor for the first time, but one of the most important things to organise before you set-up shop is your business insurance.

It might be boring but it could be the difference between your business keeping its doors open for the long-term or shutting down after an incident or accident.

So what cover do you need first and foremost? Rosemary Callaghan, Team Leader at imar, said that tradies should look at a combination of of business insurance covers to start with.

“Tradies need public liability insurance, tools insurance and should consider injury and illness insurance, or Workcover if you are a company, and vehicle insurance,” Callaghan said. For those opening a workshop, property insurance is also needed.

You might not know where to start when it comes to organising your business insurance but Callaghan said the best advice to remember is to ask as many questions as you can think of before you take out a policy.

“We get people ringing in all the time that they are starting up or they are an employee and their boss is making them a subby and they’ve got no idea,” Callaghan said. “The more questions you ask the better, we absolutely encourage that.”

Callaghan said that the experienced team at imar can help with any tradie organising business insurance.

“There wouldn’t be a trade we haven’t heard of,” Callaghan said. “Insurance is what we specialise in. Any question you’ve got, just ask.”

The reason you buy insurance is so that you are protected if you are unlucky enough to have a claim. If you buy your insurance direct from an insurer, come claim time it is you against them. As an insurance broker, imar is on your side if a claim does arise – we can deal with the insurer on your behalf throughout the claims process.

It may seem easier to sort your insurance online but imar allows you to ask questions about something that could prove vital to your business. imar also offers competitive premiums with minimal or no paperwork so give us a call and find out how we can help you.

You might be going out alone with your new business, but you won’t be alone in your insurance when you deal with imar.
